Introduction agency The Difference Between An Essay And An Article Posted By: Ray Mason

There is effectively very little difference between an essay and an article.
One major difference to note is that an essay usually develops some form of argument and therefore begins with an introduction/background. It has a number of intermediary paragraphs in which the argument or issues are discussed and then finally arrives at a conclusion to express the views of the author.

Whereas an article does not need develop an issue or argument or even display a point of view. It just divulges some information or observation made by the author. It can also be a narration or a story. Because it is aimed at readers who seek to be informed rather than entertained, it has shorter paragraphs than an essay. In other words, it is more interesting. It is likely to contain links and references and at the end, does not necessary contain any conclusion.

A non-fiction article written in the second or the third person is called an essay. The main elements of an essay are facts, stats, quotes from interview sources, and is written with an impartial tone.

An article is usually written in the first person. It is often based on your own feelings, opinions, and experiences.

It doesn’t really matter too much. whether you call a piece of prose an essay or a short story for that matter, as long as you’re clear in your own mind as to what is fiction and what is non-fiction – and that the reader can be when it matters. However in everyday life the term essay and article are used interchangeably.
